YOU CAN VOLUNTEER

Why Volunteer?

Children learn by example, so when community members like you show that you care about reading, the kids pick up pretty fast. Some kids in the classroom need a little extra help that their teachers or parents may not be able to provide. One-on-one time with a caring volunteer goes a long way toward helping these kids gain the skills they need to excel.

"But I'm not a tutor, I don't know how to teach!"
Don't let the word "tutor" scare you—no special expertise or training is required. In fact, you're capable of more than you realize. The children who need this program most are learning basic reading and comprehension skills, things any fluent reader can teach. Besides, we will put you through a literacy-training crash course to help you put your best foot forward

Of course, if you're not comfortable with tutoring, why not volunteer to simply read to a class? Just spend a little time with a class every week or month sharing the joy of reading. Your very presence will impress upon children how much fun it is to read. They will see that striving to read well, even if it's difficult for them, is well worth the effort.
